Saracen Restarting Thunderbox Operations

Saracen Mineral Holdings began commissioning its refurbished Thunderbox gold processing plant in Western Australia in early February. The company acquired the idle open-pit mine and plant from Norilsk Nickel in a transaction that was completed in May 2014. Norilsk had held the operation on care and maintenance since 2007.

Golpu Studies Support Two-stage Block Cave Development

Harmony Gold has reported the results of feasibility and prefeasibility studies for Stages 1 and 2, respectively, of its joint-venture Golpu gold-copper project in Papua New Guinea. Harmony and Newcrest Mining each currently own 50% of Golpu through their Wafi-Golpu joint venture. The Papua New Guinea government retains the right to purchase for its pro-rata share of historical costs up to a 30% equity interest at any time before the commencement of mining. If the government chooses to take up its full 30% interest, the interests of Harmony and Newcrest will become 35% each.

Atlas Iron Completes Corunna Downs PFS

Atlas Iron has reported the results of a pre-feasibility study (PFS) of its Corunna Downs iron ore project in Western Australia, which demonstrates the potential to deliver 4 million metric tons per year (mt/y) of lump and fines direct shipping ore over an initial mine life of five to six years. Atlas operates three direct shipping ore mines in the Pilbara region of Western Australia that currently produce a combined total of 14 million to 15 million mt/y. The Corunna Downs project has the potential to deliver replacement tons for the company’s Abydos and Wodgina mines, which are expected to cease mining over the next two to three years.
