MMG Gives Go-ahead for Dugald River Project

MMG Ltd. has approved an updated development plan for its underground Dugald River zinc project in the North West region of Queensland. The updated plan assumes a mine production rate of 1.5 million metric tons per year (mt/y), construction of a concentrator, and annual production of approximately 160,000 mt of zinc in concentrate, plus byproducts, over an estimated 28-year mine life.

Ranger 3 Deeps Uranium Project Shelved

Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) announced in early June that it is not proceeding to a final feasibility study of its proposed Ranger 3 Deeps underground mine at its Ranger mine in Australia’s Northern Territory. Open-pit mining ended at the Ranger mine in 2012, and ERA has been processing stockpiled ore since that time.

Western Areas Approves Mill Enhancement Project

The board of directors of Australian nickel producer Western Areas Ltd. has approved an A$22 million mill recovery enhancement project for its Forrestania operations in southwest Western Australia. Completion of the project will increase nickel recoveries in the mill by 3% to 5% over the life of the mine and add 1,200 mt/y of nickel in concentrate to its production. Unit cash operating cost is estimated at A$2.42/lb of nickel in concentrate.

Atlas Returns to Mining at Mount Webber

Atlas Mt WebberAtlas Iron reported on July 1 that it has restarted mining of direct shipping iron ore at its Mount Webber mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Processing was scheduled to restart by mid-July. Mount Webber, which is targeting a production rate of 6 million metric tons per year (mt/y), is expected to make a meaningful contribution to the company’s planned year-end production rate of 14 million to 15 million mt/y from its three Pilbara mines.
