NGEx Studying Chile/Argentina Cross-border Copper-gold Project

NGEx Resources is conducting a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) of the potential for integrated development of the Los Helados and Josemaria copper-gold deposits, located about 12 km from each other on opposites sides of the Chile/Argentina border. Los Helados is located in Region III, Chile; Josemaria is located in San Juan province, Argentina.

Alcoa Halting Suralco Alumina Production

Alcoa announced on September 14 that it is shutting down the remaining 887,000 mt/y of alumina refining capacity at the Suralco bauxite mining and refining operations in Suriname. The refinery is scheduled to be idled by November 30.

Goldcorp, Teck Combine El Morro and Relincho Projects

Goldcorp and Teck Resources have agreed to combine their respective El Morro and Relincho projects in the Atacama region of Chile into a 50/50 joint venture that they have given the interim name of “Project Corridor.” El Morro and Relincho are separated by a distance of about 40 km. Based on the results of a preliminary economic assessment (PEA), the companies plan to construct a conveyor to transport ore from El Morro to a single-line mill at Relincho.

Hecla Plans Renewal of Mining at San Sebastian, Durango, Mexico

Hecla Mining announced in mid-September that it expects to begin production by the end of 2015 at its San Sebastian project in Durango state, Mexico. The San Sebastian property is located in the heart of the Mexican silver belt and contains a series of precious and base metal-bearing epithermal veins. Hecla mined the Francine vein from 2001 to 2005, producing 545,476 short tons (st) of ore containing 177,541 oz of gold and 11.6 million oz of silver. Grades averaged 0.32 oz/st gold and 22.5 oz/st silver, making it one of the highest-grade producers in Mexico at the time.
